Historia społeczności internetowych
Poczyniono wiele prób, aby wspomóc rozwijanie się takich społeczności poprzez komunikację cyfrową wykorzystując do tego, m.in. ARPANET oraz EIES. Uczestnicy grup Routing Group napisali schemat stosowania wersji beta internetu do tworzenia komun online.
Wczesne strony internetowe tego typu, umożliwiały trzymanie kontaktu z dawnymi kolegami/koleżankami z klasy, Friends (1995), tudzież rodziną i znajomymi, SixDegrees.com (1997). Member posiadał możliwość stworzenia swojego profilu, posłania komunikatu do ludzi ze swojej listy znajomych jak również wyszukiwania wśród innych członków, ludzi o podobnych zainteresowaniach. Ideą wykorzystania wielu komputerów personalnych połączonych elektronicznie w celu tworzenia komun internetowych, zajmowano się od dawna.
