Port lotniczy (kod IATA: EDI – ICAO: EGPH) w stolicy Szkocji – Edynburgu – należy oraz jest częściowo administrowany przez British Airports Authority (BAA), który trzyma także pieczę nad sześcioma innymi portami położonymi na Wyspie Brytyjskiej: Aberdeen Airport i Glasgow International Airport (również Szkocja), London Gatwick Airport, London Heathrow Airport, London Stansted Airport oraz Southampton Airport. Zasięg BAA sięga także poza Europę (min. do Australii). Port w Edynburgu znajduje się w odległości 13 kilometrów od centrum miasta, przy autostradzie M8.
Historia lotniska teoretycznie sięga aż roku 1915, kiedy powstało tu niewielkie lądowisko Turnhouse Aerodrome, służące podczas I Wojny Światowej 603 Szwadronowi, obsługującemu niewielkie bombowce. W 1918 roku teren przeszedł pod zarząd Ministerstwa Obrony, natomiast po II Wojnie Światowej schronienie znalazły tu brytyjskie jednomiejscowe myśliwce Supermarine Spitfire.

W roku 1956 powstał terminal pasażerski, nad którym opiekę przejęło po czterech latach nowo powstałe Ministerstwo Lotnictwa.
Gwałtowny i znaczący rozwój zanotowano od lat 70′, kiedy to zarząd lotniskiem przejęło British Airports Authority, budując drugi terminal oraz nowy pas startowy. Podczas gdy nowy budynek pasażerski powstał już według zmodernizowanych norm i został przystosowany do wzrastającego ruchu na lotnisku, stary budynek terminalu a także hangarów przemianowano na tereny transportowe oraz magazyny.
Aż do roku 1980 jedynymi punktami międzynarodowymi, do których kierowane były rejsy z Edynburga, był Amsterdam w Holandii oraz Dublin w Irlandii. Gwałtowny rozwój gospodarczy i kulturowy lat 80 ‘i 90′ spowodował zainteresowanie także Szkocją – port szybko zyskał nowych klientów w postaci linii Francuskich i Niemieckich.
Lotnisko położone jest w łatwym dostępie autostrad M9 i M90, a także niedaleko trakcji kolejowej Edynburg – Glasgow. Od kilku lat rozbudowywane i rozważane są plany lepszego połączenia lotniska tak z samą stolicą, jak i z innymi miastami i drogami szybkiego ruchu. Planowana jest droga dla dojazdowych autobusów expresowych, także specjalna linia dla kolejki lotniczej.

London Heathrow Airport lub po prostu Heathrow (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL) jest prominentnym lotniskiem w Londynie i w całej Wielkiej Brytanii. Jest także jednym najczęściej odwiedzanych lotnisk w Europie, na którym możemy spotkać najbardziej międzynarodową grupę pasażerów na świecie. Londyńskie lotnisko jest bowiem często nie tylko celem podróży, ale także miejscem przesiadki do lotów w najbardziej odległe zakątki globu – jak Islandia czy Daleki Wschód.
Lotnisko Heathrow obsługiwane jest przez British Airports Authority, przewoźnika z tradycjami, właściciela siedmiu lotnisk brytyjskich. Heathrow jest także centrum linii British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways oraz British Midland Airways Limited (BMI).
Położone jest 24 kilometry (15 mil) na wschód od Londynu, posiada dwa równoległe pasy startowe (wschód-zachód) plus jeden krótki (oznaczony numerem 23), z którego samoloty startują podczas silnych wiatrów (choć od niedawna służy głównie za postój taksówek) i cztery terminale. Piąty terminal jest aktualnie w fazie budowy, ale jego otwarcie zaplanowano już na marzec 2008 roku. Na Heathrow planowane są także inne modernizacje: istnieje zamiar przebudowania i odnowienia pozostałych czterech terminali czy stworzenia dodatkowych pasów startowych. W trakcie czterech lat (od 2008-2012) mają być zburzone terminale 1 i 2, które zastąpi Heathrow East – nowoczesny architektonicznie budynek, mający zapewnić pasażerom maksimum komfortu podróży.
W czasach pierwszej wojny światowej Heathrow było miejscem przylotów i odlotów lotnicta wojskowego Wielkiej Brytanii. Loty cywilne z tego miejsca rozpoczęto dopiero w 1946 roku. Pierwszym takim rejsem był lot do Buenos Aires przez Lizbonę. 31 maja 1946 roku nastąpiło oficjalne otwarcie Heathrow dla cywilnych lotów pasażerskich.
Pierwszą płytkę pod nowoczesny pas lotu, ceremonialnie położyła królowa Elżbieta II w 1956 roku. Ona też otworzyła pierwszy terminal, wtedy znany jako Europa Building, dziś jako Terminal 2 (jeden z tych, które – jak wspomnieliśmy wcześniej – mają zostać wyburzone w najbliższym czasie). 1 kwietnia 1955 roku otwarto zaprojektowaną przez Fredericka Gibberda, niemal 40 metrową wieżę kontroli, która zastąpiła starą wieżę RAF (Royal Air Force).
W roku 1977 przedłużono londyńskie metro o drogę do Heathrow bezpośrednio z centrum miasta (konkretnie dzięki linii Piccadilly Line). Ponad dwadzieścia lat później powstała też specjalna kolejka dowożąca pasażerów na miejsce - Heathrow Express.
Liczba gości lotniska stale się powiększała, więc konieczna była budowa kolejnego terminalu. W 1986 roku książę i księżna Walii otworzyli czwarty terminal na Heathrow.
Dziś z Heathrow odlatują samoloty 90 linii. Między innymi British Airways, LOT, Air France, Lufthansa, Alitalia. Loty odbywają się w 170 kierunkach świata, m.in. do Irlandii, na Bliski Wschód, do Japonii, na Cypr, Islandię, do Stanów Zjednoczonych, Polski, Grecji i Rosji. Rocznie Heathrow odwiedza niemal 70 milionów pasażerów, z których tylko 11 procent podróżuje po Wielkiej Brytanii, a prawie połowa wybiera się w bardzo dalekie trasy.
